Sciadopitys verticillata, Japanese Umbrella Pine, is not a pine; it’s more closely related to Bald Cypress, Dawn Redwood and Giant Sequoia.  It’s an ancient conifer known from dinosaur times from the fossil record.  Revered in Japan where it’s endemic to middle altitude cloud forests, this slow-growing evergeen provides striking texture to the Gardens.
