Arbutus unedo, Strawberry Tree, is a broad-leafed evergeen with little urn-shaped, manzanita-like flowers. Its decorative, edible fruit looks strawberry-like. Surprisingly, the Strawberry Tree in the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens has been thriving there since the 1990′s even though we’re risking it with our severe winters. You’ll find it next to the Mock Orange in the Strawberry Garden bed on the west side of the Meadow.
Flowers and fruit form in fall and winter. Fruit is edible but usually mealy and bland in flavor.
