Salal

Gaultheria shallon, Salal, is a relative of Manzanita which is apparent when you see its similar bell-like flowers. Attractive foliage and colorful berrylike fruits make them good companions for rhododendrons and azaleas. This native plant grows from the central California coast north to British Columbia. The Salal specimens in the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens were planted in 1993 and have been thriving here ever since. They’re located in the Japanese Maple/Spirea bed.
