Indian Warrior

Pedicularis densiflora, commonly called Indian Warrior, is a native plant that is parasitic to the roots of other plants.  Found near manazanita in lower elevations, it grows near firs in the Gardens.  Formerly classed in the Scrophulariaceae or snapdragon family, taxonomists now class it in the Orobanchaceae or broomrape family.

Its showy calyx lobes are generally dark or bright red, but some individuals in the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens have an unusual orange color.  It blooms in spring.
