Blechnum spicant, Deer Fern, grows 1-3′ tall and up to 3′ wide. It has two types of fronds: spreading, sterile ones to 1-3/4″ wide; and narrower, stiffly erect fertile fronds with slender, widely spaced leaflets. The fertile fronds are covered with spores, the minute, dispersing, reproductive unit of the ferns. Deer Ferns are native to Siskiyou County.
